Music, dancing, food and auctions were the focus of the Annual 2009 Fiesta and Fundraiser sponsored by Grupo Pro Sayulita held on
Wednesday, March 25th from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm at the spectacular
Don Pedro palapa across from the cemetery above Sayulita´s South End playa.
In a move to address the current
recession that is affecting many expat residents and visitors to Mexico and in
particular to Sayulita, the event focused on raising funds for the specific
needs of the various entities the organization supports within the local
community.
The event´s silent auction focused on four specific community needs targeting the attendees particular areas of interest ? recycling, beach safety, the new Sayulita
Animal Clinic and local schools. A live auction and portion of the silent
auction also featured art, jewelry, travel and other luxury items as in the
past.
Taking center stage as Master of
Ceremonies, Rollie Dick, of the famous Rollie´s Restaurant. Also present - Choco Banana?s famous ChocoChips, whose hilarious Chippendale-esque performance raised festivities to frenzy.
Founded in 2006, the GPS mission
is to help to make Sayulita a better place to live and visit. Over the years, the
organization has funded major infrastructure improvements to the Primary
school, basic materials to all the class rooms (paper, pens, pencils, book,
etc), helped fund the recycling program, provided a small garbage truck and
garbage cans for trash collection, helped hookup properties to the sewage
treatment plant along Revolucion, major improvements to the Sewage Plant
operation and, in April, a new public bathroom will open next to the bus stop
next to the baseball field.
Tickets to the annual fundraiser
at Don Pedro?s ?Palapa Palace? on the point are $500 Pesos and include dinner, one
free drink and loads of fun.The
location, food and drink were all donated by Don Pedro?s Restaurant. Other

Sayulita a better place to live and visit.Right now Grupo Pro Sayulita has several active projects that need
funding.These projects along with a
brief description are:
Sayulita's
Public School Assistance - Members from Grupo Pro Sayulita recently met
with representatives from Sayulita's public schools to get a better
understanding of the state of our public schools.Unfortunately the schools are in bad
shape with 30-year-old crumbling floors, areas where children have to wade
through mud or dust because of lack of stairs and paths, non-functional
toilets and sinks and sub-par wiring. We're just starting a committee to assist. Donations
will go toward needed items.
Sayulita
Recicla- A first phase recycling program for plastics and cardboards was
started last month and is already a success with over 1 ton collected in
the first 3 weeks after start-up.Funding is needed to build the metal structures for the various
drop-off points around Sayulita.
Zoning
Revisions - Grupo Pro Sayulita is working to develop an overall usage plan
that would include open space, height recommendations, parks, plazas,
parking, etc.Everyone will be
asked to provide input that will then be coordinated and developed into a
presentation by a professional team for government review.Funding is needed to develop the
recommendation.
Cultural
Center - Right now the cultural center is in disrepair and it is
under-utilized.A volunteer team put
together a proposal to be presented to the government to allow Sayulita to
assume responsibility for the center. If approved, the building will need upgrades.Your donations will go toward making
this a center that can be used by the whole town.
Public
Bathrooms/Transit Center - Public bathrooms are currently being
constructed by the ballpark for use by everyone.Toilets have been donated and most of
the funding if coming from the Sewage Treatment Plant fund however, the next
phase is a transit center/waiting area for busses?not currently funded.
