2022 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING IN REVIEW
Thanks to all that attended our first Zoom enabled Pro Sayulita Annual General Meeting. Hopefully this won’t become our new reality, but it was good to see all of your faces during this quiet time in Sayulita.
Here is a quick recap and a final call to action for those that missed the meeting.
New Officers:
For the first time, Pro Sayulita will operate with 3 Co-Presidents. Long time Pro Sayulita Board Members; Laura Maiz, Janet Moeller, and Damien Porter will serve as Co-Presidents.

We also wish to sincerely thank Jack Jones for his steady leadership over the past 6 years. It has been a period of rapid growth for our little town with a lot of infrastructure and safety changes that needed to be made in order to keep pace. Jack’s steady hand, countless hours of phone calls and mediations, tireless efforts to clean up the water to benefit all of us and our town’s external reputation, and his ability to forge great relationships from his “office” at the corner of the town square, has made a lasting impact on the town of Sayulita. Thanks Jack! You can take a vacation now. We are glad you will continue as part of the Board.
MEETING
We completed official business of approving the 2019 expenditures and approving the budget for 2020. Any additional details are available upon request.
The hottest topic of the meeting was the new density plan that is being proposed for Sayulita. The board asked if members would give some extra funds to help fight this program. Thank you all that gave generously!
In summary, Sayulita currently has 5,000 permanent residents. This is about 20% of the building permitted under the current zoning plan from 2002 and gives us ample room for growth. The new proposal would allow up to 85,000 residents, which is in excess of 7 times the current population of Bucerias. The potential to see eight story buildings on the beach, much higher population density, huge impact to our wildlife, and a loss of all green space, are the risks if this plan goes through uncontested.
The Government proposed this plan with a limited time for citizen response. Using a high-powered environmental lawyer and an environmental architect, we quickly filed an answer pointing out that the new plan did not meet requirements of the Constitution or of Mexican Federal Environmental Laws. A claim to review the new proposal submitted by the government was filed and we are now waiting for a government response. The filing was supported by a petition with over 1,000 signatures. There will be more steps.

Playa Los Muertos
Finally, a quick update on the Los Muertos beach wall situation. Pro Sayulita has been working with a number Civil of Associations (AC’s) in town including Ser Su Voz, Pueblo Magico, Campamento Tortuguero, Colectivo Playas Limpias, Alianza de la Costa Verde, Ecoguardia, to modify the building going on at the entrance to the beach. These organizations met with the homeowner last week and hope to have a compromise solution in the coming weeks. For now, construction has been stopped by SEMARNAT. Along with all the previously mentioned AC’s, we are seeking a remedy that guarantees a viable access to the beach. These are challenging times not only in Sayulita, but worldwide. As we are coping with COVID, we have come together as a village to help those in need. Pro Sayulita has contributed to various food banks in town and in addition, has been donating 60 dozen eggs weekly to Casa Clu in San Ignacio where many of the workers in Sayulita live.
We would like to acknowledge a few of our Sayulita Heroes who have come to the forefront to bring much needed aid to those in need. The women at Atico who have set up a soup kitchen 7 days a week from 2-4 PM. Sayulita Cares whose many volunteers have now delivered over 4700 food packages to families in the area. La Huerta for delivering food beyond the borders of Sayulita. Gavilanes Vigilantes for all their hard work in securing the town's entrances and keeping possibly infected people out of town during the early stages of the pandemic. Every one of these volunteers have been tireless in their efforts and should be congratulated, along with each and every one of you for all that you have done to help keep Sayulita safe and fed.

También deseamos agradecer sinceramente a Jack Jones por su liderazgo constante durante los últimos 6 años. Ha sido un período de rápido crecimiento para nuestra pequeña ciudad con una gran cantidad de infraestructura y cambios de seguridad que debían hacerse para mantener el ritmo. La mano firme de Jack, innumerables horas de llamadas telefónicas y mediaciones, esfuerzos incansables para limpiar el agua para beneficio de todos y la imagen de nuestro poblado, y su capacidad para forjar excelentes relaciones desde su "oficina" en la esquina de la plaza de la ciudad, ha tenido un impacto duradero en la ciudad de Sayulita. Gracias Jack! Puedes tomarte unas vacaciones ahora. Nos alegra que continúe como parte de la Junta Directiva.
Reunión
Se aprobaron oficialmente el reporte financiero del año 2019 y el presupuesto para 2020. Si desea información adicional puede solicitarla.
El tema más destacado de la reunión fue el nuevo plan de desarrollo urbano que se propone para Sayulita. La Junta Directiva solicito a los miembros fondos adicionales para ayudar a combatir este programa. Muchas gracias por sus generosas donaciones!
En resumen, Sayulita actualmente tiene 5,000 residentes permanentes. Se presentó una solicitud para revisar la nueva propuesta presentada por el gobierno y ahora estamos en espera de la respuesta. La solicitud fue respaldada con más de 1,000 firmas de ciudadanos que no están de acuerdo con lo propuesto. Ahora es el momento de luchar contra este plan. Finalmente, una actualización sobre la situación del muro que se construye en playa de Los Muertos. "Sayulita Cares", cuyos numerosos voluntarios han entregado más de 4700 paquetes de alimentos a las familias de la zona. "La Huerta" por entregar comida más allá de las fronteras de Sayulita. "Gavilanes Vigilantes" por todo su duro trabajo para asegurar las entradas del poblado y mantener a las personas posiblemente infectadas fuera de Sayulita, durante las primeras etapas de la pandemia. Todos estos voluntarios merecen nuestro agradecimiento por sus incansables esfuerzos para ayudar a mantener a Sayulita segura y alimentada.
